με θέμα:

“How do I talk to children about Sex? Understanding the Role of Sex Education in Child Protection”.

There is considerable research evidence that lack of appropriate sex education can render children and adolescents more vulnerable and at risk of childhood sexual abuse, sexual exploitation and sexual violence. The workshop will explore the changing meaning of sex in the 21st century, how it impacts on the development of sexuality in children, teenagers and later adults, especially with the digitisation of sex, such as online pornography, dating apps and social media. It will examine the impact of developmentally premature exposure to sexuality through childhood sexual abuse, online pornography and how this reshapes the child’s and adolescent’s brain. The focus will be on typical and atypical sexual development in childhood, understanding the difference between age appropriate consensual sexual activity and sexual abuse between peers and siblings, and how to talk to children and young people in an age appropriate way about sex. In addition, the sexual arousal cycle and the influence of early attachment experiences in the formation of sexual scripts and arousal templates will be explored and how this can used in sex education for young people. Emphasis is placed on enhancing awareness of sexuality and the role of sexual shame, and how this links to a range of later sexual expressions, such as hypersexuality, sexual compulsions and addictions, online pornography and cybersex. It is only through access to knowledge about sex and sexuality and age appropriate sexual behaviour that children and young people can be adequately protected from sexual abuse and sexual violence. This practical workshop aims to increase awareness and understanding for parents and caregivers, so that they can truly protect and safeguard children and young people. Participants will be encouraged to explore their own relationship to sex and sexuality and explore how to talk about sex in a non-shaming way to make it easier and more comfortable to talk to children and young people about sex.
